Amid COVID-19, Edibles Increased in Popularity

When the novel coronavirus initially hit, cannabis dispensaries saw record sales in multiple states. While the numbers eventually flattened—COVID-19 changed the industry in ways we would have never predicted.

For example, through social distancing measures, dispensaries began offering enhanced curbside pick-up and delivery services. Not only did these show to be extremely popular, but it’s also likely they’re going to be staples of the cannabis industry.

However, one of the most interesting trends is what products were selling the most. While cannabis flower remains king, edibles sales skyrocketed across the nation throughout the pandemic. According to a Seattle, Washington-based cannabis analytics firm, Headset, edible sales increased by 60 percent throughout 2020 across seven state markets—from $767 million in 2019 to $1.23 billion this past year.

The trend isn’t too surprising. Again, COVID-19’s social distancing measures brought in a new wave of habits for all of us. As cannabis connoisseurs, it’s likely we weren’t passing joints around with friends.

However, these trends also reflect the fact that there are so many new people entering this industry. With legalization measures and overall perception changes, recent reports have found that cannabis use is on the rise among younger and older adults.

Considering the harmful effects smoking has on our bodies, it comes as no surprise many newcomers would opt for a THC-infused baked good instead. This is especially true for older adults—many of whom would prefer consuming cannabis through familiar means.

Not to mention, being as COVID-19 infects the lungs, it’s no wonder many are trying to keep this organ as healthy as possible.

With this new trend in cannabis consumption, it’s likely we’re going to see a number of innovations when it comes to edibles. Already, we see some technology companies putting their heads together and developing products like Smart Cups—a cup that allows you to choose how much cannabis you want to be infused in your drink.
