Whether you’re a new or experienced user, the Entourage Effect is an important term that can greatly effect how you experience CBD products.

Within cannabis there are hundreds of different compounds, including cannabinoids like CBD, each with unique medicinal properties. While certain compounds, such as THC, may deliver stronger effects than other compounds, multiple compounds combined will deliver stronger effects due to the Entourage Effect.

What is the Entourage Effect

The entourage effect occurs when CBD is taken together with different chemicals in the cannabis plant, instead of in isolation. The concept is that using the entire plant rather than 1 facet, this fosters the health advantages of cannabinoids. The impacts of CBD are magnified by working in conjunction with other cannabinoids, as well as other cannabis compounds such as terpenes.

Below we will explore the different compounds found in cannabis and how they work together to deliver stronger relief.

Cannabinoids and the Entourage Effect

Cannabinoids, such as CBD, are one of the primary active compounds produced in cannabis.

Each cannabinoid has a unique chemical structure and can interact deliver a variety of different effects on the body by interacting with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

When multiple cannabis compounds are combined, their effects are multiplied and the benefits experienced are greater.

Terpenes and the Entourage Effect

Terpenes are plant compounds that provide plants flavor or a smell. There are loads of terpenes which you come in contact with on a regular basis. Here are a few of the primary ones:

  • Limonene – a zesty terpene produced in the peel of citrus fruits
  • Pinene – a robust, earthy terpene produced in the sticky resin of pine
  • Eucalyptol – a fragrant terpene produced in eucalyptus and tea tree
  • Linalool – a floral terpene most commonly found in and associated with lavender

Cannabis, like all other plants, is packed with a wide variety of terpenes, each impacting the body’s olfactory system to deliver a range of unique benefits.

When used in conjunction with cannabinoids like CBD, their effects and the effects of the cannabinoid is intensified.

Measuring the Entourage Effect in Different Types of  CBD Products

There are a wide variety of CBD products, including CBD oil tinctures, capsules, gummies, and more. A majority of these CBD products are available with different types of CBD including: CBD isolate, broad spectrum, and full spectrum.

Based on which kind of CBD is utilized, the effects of the entourage effect will vary.

To understand which type of CBD products deliver the strongest entourage effect, let’s explore how the entourage effect is fostered in different types of CBD products.

CBD Isolate

CBD Isolate is created by isolating CBD and draining the rest of the substances and chemicals. This ends in a pure CBD extract that does not contain any other cannabinoids or terpenes.

Because of this, CBD isolate products will not provide the Entourage Effect. This is one of the primary reasons most CBD users prefer either broad spectrum or full spectrum CBD products; however, there are certain situations when CBD isolate is preferred.

Full Spectrum CBD

Full spectrum CBD contains all compounds found naturally occurring in the cannabis plant. As such, Full spectrum CBD contains a robust variety of cannabinoids and terpenes and will naturally deliver a powerful entourage effect.

While Full Spectrum CBD products can deliver a stronger entourage effect than CBD isolate, they may contain THC. Because of this, Full Spectrum CBD products are not ideal for all individuals.

Broad Spectrum CBD

In most cases, Broad Spectrum CBD is the ideal choice for most users.

Like Full Spectrum CBD, Broad Spectrum CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant, along with all other natural compounds found naturally occurring in the plant. Once it is extracted; however, broad spectrum extracts are then further refined by completely removing all traces of THC.

As a result, broad spectrum CBD can deliver most, if not all, of the benefits of Full Spectrum CBD, without the risky legal disadvantages.
